Low-cost box
I have previously made a Japanese puzzle box like the one in the photo. I am not sure if the name "low-cost box" is correct, but the cost of the yosegi sheet is indeed low😅 However, the structure of the box is properly made as usual. The mechanism is not inferior in any way. The official name of this box is "One-Point Yosegi Puzzle Box." The reason I made this box is to offer a lower-priced option, making it more accessible for a larger number of customers. Since puzzle boxes are relatively expensive, customers who might want to try them could be discouraged by the price. Therefore, I thought it was necessary to have a box that could be easily tried first.
I made it around 2018 to 2019. The size of the box in the photo is 3-sun, and there are versions with 7-step and 12-step mechanism. After making this size, I also made a 4-sun size. Even though the cost of the yosegi sheet is low, it is quite difficult to properly attach the sheet to the center and corners of the box's lid panel. This is because when cutting the yosegi sheet to this size, the yosegi sheet might become disjointed.
Additionally, the cut parquet sheet is very prone to peeling. This is because it is not attached over the entire surface of the lid panel, so the corners of the sheet may rub and peel off. To strengthen it, I integrate the sheet with the lid panel through painting (finish coating). After firmly attaching the sheet with adhesive, I let the paint soak in, creating a membrane that binds the lid panel and the yosegi sheet together. This prevents the sheet from peeling off even if the lid is rubbed.
Although this was initially intended to be a low-cost box, it turned out to be quite a labor-intensive project😅 Nonetheless, since I sold these boxes at a lower price than other puzzle boxes, they became very popular.
And this year, I will be making this puzzle box again! At the request of a shop owner, I will be producing it once more. I might be able to introduce it on this site as well!😄
