Sansui

The photo shows Mt. Fuji today. Japan is now entering the full summer season, so the snow on Mt. Fuji has completely melted. Despite this, I hear it's still very cold at the summit. Today, it's about 5 to 6 degrees Celsius up there. Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan, with an elevation of 3,776 meters. It's very famous and has been depicted in various paintings due to its beautiful shape. There are also Japanese puzzle boxes designed with Mt. Fuji motifs.

These puzzle boxes have designs on their top and bottom faces, created using a technique called "Moku-zougan"(Wooden inlay). The most popular Mt. Fuji-themed puzzle box design is called "Sansui". 'San' means 'mountain' in Japanese, and 'sui' means 'water'. The mountain represents Mt. Fuji, and the water refers to Lake Ashi, a famous lake in the Hakone area.
In this region, we call the view of Mt. Fuji as seen from this lake 'Sansui'. We've been creating this image using the Moku-zougan technique and selling it not just on puzzle boxes, but on various wooden products.

Of course, I don't make these wood inlays myself. There are specialist craftsmen for wood inlay who spend many years mastering this skill. I won't go into detail about wood inlay today, but it's worth noting that there are very few of these artisans left, making their work rare and precious.

I have made puzzle boxes with the 'Sansui' design many times in the past. These were either products from my own workshop or orders from dealers in Hakone. They've always been very popular and sold out quickly, Thank you!😊
I don't have any in stock at my workshop recently, but I'd like to add Sansui puzzle boxes to my product line again in the future🗻
