Mame drawer box

One of my past works is the Mame 6 steps Drawer Yosegi Japanese Puzzle Box from 2010. When I saw this photo again, I thought, "6 steps?"🤔 However, the data for this photo said "6 steps." I remembered making a Mame drawer box before, but I thought it was a 4-step mechanism. there are 3 sliding panels, which each move once (side panel 1 > top panel > side panel 2), and the drawer comes out on the 4th step (this drawer does not have a lid panel). this is 4 steps type.

However, in the case of this box, the lid panel opens once with the usual 4-step movements of a puzzle box, and then the first (step 1) panel moves upwards again, and the drawer comes out. That's why the height of this box is a little higher. It's probably the same as the Mame 22 steps box I made before. This is to make space for the drawers.

Additionally, when this panel moves a second time, to prevent it from coming off completely, I installed a small rod inside that acts as a stopper and stops the panel halfway. This construction method is also used for other drawer boxes, but since this box was very small, it was difficult to make the structure.

As far as I know, the only Mame box with a drawer is the one with a 4-step mechanism, and it is even smaller than this box. I've made this smaller size 4-step Mame box before too. I think I made this box as an extension of that, if I remember correctly. This is one box I'd like to revive... if I have the time😅

The inspiration for making this box with drawers was a piece by a late master craftsman that I received from a collector. But that's for another time.
