6-sun 27-step box

Today, it was sunny from the morning for the first time in a while. I successfully delivered the hexagonal puzzle boxes I recently made. Most of these are for the Hakone market, so you might see them in shops around Hakone.

The day after the rain stops tends to be more humid than the actual rainy day. So today, instead of doing precise, detail-oriented work, I focused on making the "Hashibami Panel" for the 6-sun Aruki(moving panels) box and assembling the frame parts. As I mentioned before, since I am only making 9boxes this time, the work is progressing quickly!😅
The photo shows the top and bottom Aruki panels of this box, which are quite large, about 16 cm in length. Because of this size, the "Hashibami" method is necessary. This method involves creating a single board by crossing the wood grain, which helps prevent warping. Before making these Aruki panels, I pre-process them by adding a stepped structure in advance. I also added the stepped structure to the side Aruki panels at the same time, but I have not yet cut them to the exact dimensions. After assembling the frame part, I will cut them to match.

After that, I assembled the frame and installed the internal parts. I also made some improvements this time.
Compared to the previous version, I made the side panels and the Axis parts slightly thicker. Specifically, the side panels are 0.5mm thicker, and the axis panels are 1mm thicker. Although the difference is small, it makes the box much more durable. It also feels slightly heavier when held. Since a 6-sun box is quite large, it needs to be sturdy. Thicker panels also make the box less affected by external humidity and temperature, which is beneficial. However, this also slightly reduces the internal space—by about 1 to 2mm, haha...😄
Tomorrow, I plan to work on the Aruki mechanism for this box. If possible, I hope to also attach the yosegi panels to the top and bottom surfaces.
