6-sun box

Today, the weather was bad, and it started raining around noon. Fortunately, I didn’t have any assembly or fine-detail work to do today, so I focused on preparing for my next projects. I have started working on the Knock Box, as I mentioned yesterday, and at the same time, I have begun making the 6-sun 27-steps puzzle box. The design features traditional yosegi for the top and bottom panels, while the side panels are made of solid Hoo wood and nyatoh wood.

Today, I already prepared the materials and made the frame parts. You might think this is quite an early start, but in fact, I am only making nine pieces this time. I have decided not to produce any more 6-sun boxes this year and am not accepting new orders for them. The reason is the shortage of traditional yosegi sheets. This batch is actually the remaining orders from 2023. I sincerely apologize for the long wait, but the customers have been very understanding. Based on the production schedule, it was finally time to start working on them. Since it would be inefficient to produce only these orders, I have decided to make a few extra pieces for my inventory as well. Please look forward to them! This is actually only my second time making a 27-step mechanism in a 6-sun size. If I am able to obtain extra yosegi sheets in the future, I might consider making them again, but for now, there are no plans for a re-release.

Since this is originally a 6-sun size box, the internal mechanism for the 27-step movement should ideally be slightly larger. However, I will use the same mechanism size as my other 27-step puzzle boxes. When I made this box last time, I felt that the mechanism was a bit small for the box size. However, modifying the mechanism specifically for this size would be quite challenging, so I decided to use the same specifications again. Therefore, the internal parts will be the same as those used in 5-sun boxes with a 27-step mechanism. However, the "bocchi(inside small wood parts)" must be adjusted to match the width of this box. If left unchanged, it would not align properly with the "kannuki (slide keys) length, causing warping in the kannuki board.

As mentioned above, the side panels will be made using hoo and nyatoh wood. When I first started making this 6-sun size, I used nyatoh and kusu wood. However, since camphor wood is now out of stock, I have recently been using a combination of hoo and nyatoh wood instead.Good-quality hoo wood is also limited, so this combination is somewhat special for this production. Since the side panels of a box this size are quite wide, there is a concern about warping. For this reason, using two different types of wood together is effective. By joining the boards, the warping of the panels can be minimized.
For now, I will continue working on these process.
