36-step box

Today was an extremely cold day. From my workshop, I can see Mount Fuji, and on some days, the wind from there is especially chilly. Today was one of those windy days.

I had plans today and was out for most of the day, so I didn’t make much progress. However, I did spend a little time at the workshop. My stock is running very low currently, and many items are out of stock. Even the 5-sun puzzle box, which I always try to keep in stock, is down to just one piece (a 5-sun 27-step puzzle box). I want to making something, and I’m considering making the 36-step puzzle box for the first time in a while.

This 5-sun 36-step puzzle box is an upgraded version of the 27-step puzzle box, with two additional Kannuki (slide keys) on the opposite side (moving in the opposite direction) to increase the number of steps. Because of this, the internal parts (That number has doubled) and the size (thickness and dimensions) of the Aruki panels (moving panels) are the same as those in the 27-step version. The main difference is that the Kannuki of the 27-step version is split in the middle, allowing each side to move independently.
As far as I know, I might be the first to create this type of 36-step mechanism. A long time ago—almost 30 years ago—I used to make a different 36-step puzzle box. That version had eight Kannuki. Speaking of eight Kannuki, I have also made 54-step, 66-step, and even 78-step puzzle boxes (I haven’t made them in a while...).

Models with more Kannuki require more time and mental focus, so it’s always difficult to start making them. However, since it’s been a while, I’m thinking of making the next 5-sun puzzle box a 36-step version. Of course, if I receive a request for a different step count, I might have to postpone it 😅
