3-sun 12-step box
I am currently making 4.2-sun boxes, but since Sunday, the weather has been rainy, and the humidity has increased. To further dry the top and bottom panels for these boxes, I temporarily paused production and started working on the next project, the 3-sun 12-step puzzle box.
This time, I received a small request for 3-sun 12-step boxes, so I decided to start this batch to fulfill that order. The request needs to be completed quickly, so I prioritized its production.
As you may know, puzzle boxes are not usually made in small quantities but are produced in batches. This means that the same type of puzzle box needs to be made in quantities ranging from around 30 to 100 pieces.
Of course, it is possible to make just a few, but it is very inefficient and difficult to make it cost-effective. Therefore, I decided to produce 40 boxes this time as well. Aside from the requested boxes, the rest will have the same natural wood design. The top and bottom panels will be designed as shown in the photo. These are familiar materials: Japanese Urushi wood, Southeast Asian Rengas wood, and South American Purple-heart.
The 3-sun 12-step puzzle box has been popular as an entry-level puzzle box, but due to rising costs in recent years, its price has also increased. With the recent depreciation of the yen, it is becoming an expensive product in Japan, and fewer people are purchasing it. However, in other countries, it still seems to be an affordable and popular item at its usual price. I hope this design will also be well received π
I think walnut side panels would match this top panel design well. However, I currently have no stock of walnut, and the ordered materials are unlikely to arrive in time. So, I am considering making the side panels with a different wood. I am thinking of using Agathis wood, but since its color does not add much contrast to the design, I plan to use a different wood for the edging. However, Agathis is a very stable and easy-to-work-with wood, commonly used in the structure of puzzle boxes. This makes it an excellent choice for side panels, especially for the Kannuki(slide keys) panels π
