4.2-sun frame

Today, I wanted to work on the finishing processes for 2-sun cubes and 4-sun 18-step puzzle boxes. However, I have errands to run, so I don’t have enough time. Instead, I started by assembling the framework of the 4.2-sun boxes I worked on yesterday.
The assembly method is the same as that of the 4-sun 21-step puzzle box. When working on this task in the morning, it’s important to note that the glue takes longer to dry. Since the positions of the axles and frame parts tend to shift easily, I carefully check their alignment as I proceed. The glue is water-based, so the drying speed varies depending on the temperature and humidity.

Yesterday, I mentioned that the 21-step puzzle box could be made with the same materials as the 18-step puzzle box. While the thickness of the frame panels and Aruki (moving panels) wood is the same, the internal components with a staircase-like structure are different. When the number of steps increases by three, an additional layer is added to the internal staircase-like components. The 18-step puzzle box can use parts from the 14-step design, but the 21-step puzzle box requires its own dedicated parts.

Afterward, I had a little time, so I worked on the finishing process for the 2-sun cubes. Since this batch is made of solid wood, I polished all six sides and cut the corner edges diagonally. This completes the finishing process, and the next step will be the base coating. However, that's all I managed to do today. Since I plan to do the base coating for the unfinished 4-sun 18-step puzzle boxes at the same time, I re-secured the cubes with rubber bands and placed them in a case for storage. The reason for using rubber bands is that the last panels attached may warp before painting, so this helps keep them in place.
If possible, I plan to work on the finishing process for the 4-sun 18-step puzzle boxes tomorrow and proceed with the base coating for both types at the same time.
