3-sun 12-step box (2)
Today, I started a bit later than usual and worked on several tasks. First, I applied the final coating to some 5-sun 27-step puzzle boxes that had been stored at the base-coating stage since last year. The dry air helped the coating dry quickly😲 Among them, I made three pieces of a solid wood type, as shown in the photos.
The solid wood version of the 5-sun 27-step puzzle box I made last year has already sold out, so the timing for finishing these new ones turned out to be just right. I’d like to consistently include this kind of solid wood type in my lineup if possible. This time, the design might be a bit simpler than the previous version.
For the top panel, I used Nyatoh, Rengas, and Urushi wood. For the box's borders, I used walnut wood. The deep color of walnut seems to give the box a sharp, cohesive look.
After that, I finished assembling the frame for some 3-sun 12-step puzzle boxes and planned to start making the Aruki panels today. However, I realized that I was out of 3-sun parts. As I’ve mentioned occasionally, I usually produce a bit more of these standard puzzle box components to keep in stock, but it seems I used them all up during the previous production run.
So, today, I focused on making the missing parts and attaching them. Well, since the year has just started, I think I’ll take things a bit slow at first😂
The parts are as shown in the photos. While their shape is the same as those used for 4-sun or 5-sun 14-step puzzle boxes, the 3-sun parts are slightly narrower. This is related to the thickness of the Aruki. For the 3-sun 12-step puzzle boxes, the Aruki on the top panel is only 4.5 mm thick, so these parts are made narrower at about 9 mm.
I plan to start working on the 4-sun boxes I mentioned yesterday early next week, so I’m thinking of preparing for that this week. For the products intended for Hakone market, I’ll be making boxes with Yosegi sheets attached, so I plan to paste the sheets in advance.
