4-sun double compartment box

Happy New Year! I look forward to another wonderful year ahead.
Today, I went to my workshop but didn’t do any crafting. Instead, I visited a relative’s house to exchange New Year’s greetings and share a meal. Later, I worked on making New Year’s greeting cards (Nengajo).
Nengajo are traditional Japanese greeting cards sent to celebrate the New Year, and they are delivered by the postal service. In recent years, the number of people sending these cards has declined due to the rise of paperless trends and the use of social media. However, I make sure to send replies to everyone within Japan who sends me a card. This year, the Expo will be held in Osaka starting in spring, so I purchased cards featuring designs related to the event (photo).

I am currently working on the 3-sun, 12-step puzzle box, but early in the New Year, I plan to start making 4-sun double-compartment puzzle boxes. These are for an order from the Hakone market, but I also plan to make a few for my own inventory.
This time, the mechanism will be 7 steps plus 7 steps, with the same mechanism on both sides. For the Hakone market, I’ll create a slightly unique design, while for my own stock, I’ll use the usual traditional Yosegi and checkerboard patterns (ichimatsu). It’s been a while since I’ve made these (photo).

Tonight, I plan to have mochi (rice cake) sent by my relatives for dinner. Mochi is one of the traditional lucky foods of the New Year and is said to embody the spirit of the gods. Round mochi is often displayed at entrances and offered to the gods, symbolizing celebration when it is eaten.
Starting tomorrow, I plan to gradually resume crafting. I’d be delighted if you continue to follow my work this year as well!
