2 sun cube drawer box (2)
This time, I didn’t write much about the production process of the 2-sun cube puzzle box, but it was successfully completed today along with the 3-sun cube puzzle box. The photo shows the final finishing process. Since shipping operations for this year will end this Friday, this product will actually be for next year and will be sold accordingly. While production in my workshop will continue for a little while longer, the shipping company will be closed, so no shipments can be made until January 6th next year.
In most cases, Japanese businesses will be on holiday from this Saturday, December 28th, until January 5th. This year, the holiday period seems slightly longer than usual, likely due to the way the days of the week fall.
I have added the 3-sun cube box to this site today. This version features an 18-step mechanism. Due to limitations in the size of the Ichimatsu Yosegi sheet, I couldn't prepare enough for all the boxes, so I also made the limited boxes of solid wood versions.
As mentioned on the product page, the walnut material used for the side panels of this box is wider than usual, so it is made by joining multiple pieces rather than from a single board. I appreciate your understanding. It has become increasingly difficult to source such wide walnut boards recently. With the rising cost of wood, this seems inevitable.
Today, I also worked on a part of the production process for the 5-sun 27-step puzzle box. I prepared the materials, shaved them down to a thickness of 8.5mm, and processed them into a stepped pattern. When time is limited, I often complete this part of the Aruki (moving panels) production for the 27-step puzzle box and continue the rest of the work the next day. This time as well, I decided to leave it at this stage and resume work in the coming days.
The stepped pattern for this box has four levels, one more than the 18-step mechanism. Since the dimensions are set in precise 0.1mm increments, I am always careful to ensure they are exactly accurate during processing. In this case, the steps measure 1.9mm + 2.2mm + 2.2mm + 2.2mm, adding up to 8.5mm.
In parallel with this 5-sun box, I am considering starting production on a smaller puzzle box. Perhaps something like the 3-sun size box might be a good choice...🤔
